The Future of Content Consumption
This is not a COVID-19 piece. This is not a political piece. There are plenty of places to go for news. All I’m trying to do here is open a dialogue on the future of Sci-Fi content and how it’s consumed.
These days it’s easier than ever to purchase our content digitally. If you’re looking for a new eBook, BOOM! With a few clicks, it’s in your reader. New audiobook? Same process. TV series or movie? You know what digital streaming service to patron for your fix.
How much longer until physical books, MP3’s, CD’s, or DVD’s go the way of the dinosaur? Or have they already?
Personally, I don’t think books will ever completely disappear. In the same way you can still find a vinyl record if you really want to. There’s just something about holding a book. There are way too many purists still out there, like myself, who like to own physical copies of our favorite novels.
I do think we are falling into the minority, however. I have a four-year-old daughter, and I believe she’ll grow up with understanding digital data as the norm and physical items as the unique. On the brighter side of things, it’s easier than ever to get lost in our latest Sci-Fi binges, be it The Mandalorian or a reread of our favorite Edgar Rice Burroughs we can immediately hold in our hands via an e-reader.
